Arts in Health Innovation for Hospitals

Context

Arts in Health Innovation is an interdisciplinary approach facilitated by Studio Poesis, exploring the synergies between art and healthcare—not as an alternative to existing clinical practice, but as a supportive and human complement. It helps healthcare professionals reduce fear, strengthen relationships, and radically improve the work environment and culture within their departments.

Arts in Health Innovation is carried out in several phases to ensure that each artistic intervention responds directly to the concrete needs of patients, staff, and clinical environments. The process includes:

  • Needs assessment through interviews, workshops, and on-site observation

  • Matching with relevant artists selected through a professional expert panel

  • Development of artistic concept proposals tailored to the identified needs

  • Production and implementation of the final artworks within the healthcare setting

Throughout the entire process, both users and healthcare professionals are actively involved. The impact on health and wellbeing is continuously evaluated, generating evidence on how sensory and existential stimuli can drive innovation and create meaningful improvements within the healthcare sector.

These methods have been developed by researchers from Studio Poesis in collaboration with Danish health and art researchers over the past 10 years. The methods have been tested in the Departments of Intensive Care, Palliative Care, Urology, Maternity, and Dementia—each domain showcasing different sensory and existential needs, and each domain suggesting a particular stimuli and intervention.

Documented effects

Throughout the entire Arts in Health Innovation process, the impact of the artistic interventions is continuously assessed. The aim is to generate evidence on how art can foster:

  • Better patient experiences

  • Improved staff wellbeing

  • More humanised clinical environments

  • Innovation in healthcare culture

These results help demonstrate the value of art as a catalyst for innovation and improvement in the healthcare sector.

Listen to the Testimonials:

“Bringing art and artists into a hospital expands the perspective we have as healthcare professionals. It adds another dimension in working with people and their health. The further into the hospital we go, the closer we get to where the patients stay, and the less we actually have of art and culture. It’s an ambition and a vision we have. It’s that art and culture should go all the way into the hospital rooms where the patients are.”

Director of Nursing, Rikke Degn, RHG

“Some of what has given me the most knowledge in this innovation project is ensuring that people from other professional fields are involved from the start. That collaboration has been truly unique, and for me, it’s the greatest gift I’ve received, and to become aware of the importance of working interdisciplinary and moving outside the hospital frame to find our collaborators.”

Leading midwife, Ann Fogsgaard, RHG
